description:
Photo of Athens L and N Passenger Depot and Chapman Quarters businesses in 1979. Typed on back: "BW, Neg., 3(4), December 10, 1979. The L and N Passenger Depot, (Left) and buildings in the 'Rainey Block,' later the 'Chapman' block, (Right), Athens, Alabama. Taken from S. Side of Washington St. and looking N. Along the L and N RR tracks, (Monroe St.). In about 1909 the depot looked much as it does in this picture. In 1914 the L and N had 'double tracked' the RR from Athens so thus there were two pair of rails instead of one pair. N. bound trains used the E. track and S. bound trains used the west track which ran about where the camera was when this picture taken. The W. track was taken up a few years ago and now N. and south trains are so are so controlled as to use the single track shown which is about where the north bound track was after 1914."
